Cultural Appropriation is a worldwide controversy in simple terms it means when a person from one culture usually the majority copies or uses elements from another culture usually the minority. This could include wearing traditional clothing like African garments that was meant for a particular tribe or wearing a hairstyle like box braids that may not be fit for their texture, or a certain race created it. This phenomenon is going viral around the black diaspora because many feels like our culture is being taken when it was ours to begin with. The problem is that cultural appropriation is ignoring the history and meaning behind these cultural ties that is constantly stripped away from u since slavery times till present day. The majority walks freely with elements of our culture with knowing or caring about the history about it. On the other hand, cultural appreciation is a different concept which is meant to be respectful sharing between cultures or praising one and another culture while being educated on it. I will dive deeper on this concept in next week's blog. Stay tuned!
