Last week I talked about cultural appropriation and its impact on minority groups when one cultures is mocked or copied to become another's. Cultural appreciation is supposed to be the opposite it focuses on the respectful and thoughtful appreciation or engagement with the practices and art of cultures different from one’s own. It includes a willingness to learn and understand what is behind the particular cultural aspects, may it be food, clothing, music, or rituals while acknowledging its roots and historical context. Unlike appropriation which tends to remove and exploit culture for personal gain appreciation revolves around humility, curiosity, and giving back. It’s about coming together with the cultures instead of taking what isn’t ours to begin with and recognizing the importance of diversity without reducing it to a trend. Listening to the people from the culture, giving them credit, and understanding that some elements can be sacred or not meant for everyone are the things true appreciation embodies. At its core, a creation and celebration of humanity, the creativity we share; together. With care and respect.
